UPCOMING CONCERT
Grant Us Peace
March 3, 2019 3 p.m.
Benson Great Hall, Bethel University, Arden Hills, MN

All of the music for this concert reflects times of great instability—and reflects on coming through them. George Walker's beautiful Lyric for Strings will open our March concert. Composed in 1946, with the Ravel piano concerto (1929–31) it bookends World War II.

Our concert will feature another European composer inspired by American art - this time, Ralph Vaughan Williams drawing on American literature in his Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace). Written and first performed in 1936, in addition to three poems by Walt Whitman, he also incorporated sections from the Mass, part of a speech against the Crimean War, and excerpts from the Bible.

Maurice Ravel's piano concerto in G Major was influenced by American jazz. We are delighted that none other than St. Paul native Andrew Staupe will be playing with us! Currently Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Andrew is a former student of University of Minnesota professor and concert pianist Lydia Artymiw. He has played at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Salle Cortot in Paris, and in March, you can hear him play this absolutely breathtaking piece at the Benson Great Hall at Bethel University in Arden Hills. Prepare to feel like you've been suspended in time on a bright, serene morning on Lake Superior. And that's just the second movement.

The concert begins at 3 p.m.; pre-concert talk is at 2:15 p.m.
