Petrushka
Sunday, October 13, 2019 - 3 p.m. Pre-concert talk - 2:15 p.m. Simley Theater of Performing Arts 2920 80th St E, Inver Grove Heights, MN 55076 Ho-Yin Kwok, conductor Jotaro Nakano, guest conductor Ketèlbey: Sanctuary of the Heart Nielsen: Aladdin Suite Stravinsky: Petrushka (1911 concert version) Music Director Ho-Yin Kwok will lead the orchestra in three works that will in turn move you, delight you, and excite you.
Albert Ketèlby’s gorgeous Sanctuary of the Heart is based on the Kol Nidrei, a central part of the services for Yom Kippur. Andrew Lloyd Webber has said he wants it played at his funeral. Guest conductor Jotaro Nakano will join us for this piece. Carl Nielsen’s Aladdin Suite was originally written as incidental music for a play that ran for only 15 performances. Nielsen’s music has long outlasted the play. It has been called “the Danish rival to Grieg’s Peer Gynt for atmosphere and tunefulness.” The program concludes with Stravinsky’s masterwork Petrushka, one of the three great ballets composed between 1910 and 1913 that changed the course of music. It concerns puppets brought magically to life. A love triangle ensues. What could possibly go wrong? |
